Disabled launch Charter challenge to Medical Assistance in Dying; Kittens
From the press release:
A coalition of disability rights organizations and two personally affected individuals have filed a Charter challenge with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. They oppose Track 2 of Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) law, which provides assisted suicide to people with a disability who are not dying, or whose death is not “reasonably foreseeable.”
Here is a copy of the legal application. I was particularly struck by
A law that allows people with disabilities to access state-funded death in circumstances where they cannot access state-funded supports they need to make their suffering tolerable is grossly disproportionate.
This has gotten the attention of this weeks Highwire which points out that Pfizer contributed to Dying with Dignity Canada which lobbied for MAiD and that Kayla Pollock who was paralyzed after receiving a Moderna booster was twice offered MAiD in hospital. I find it concerning that death is becoming a medical treatment especially in the hands of our current medical industry.
