Ostriches Ostracised; Vaccine Choice Canada meeting
Like the US, Canada is also trying to eradicate H5N1 avian influenza in commercial flocks by killing the entire flock if any birds are infected. This seems unlikely to succeed since avian influenza is endemic in wild birds in Canada. The Canadian Food
Inspection Agency (CFIA) is currently trying to kill the ostriches at Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, BC even though the remaining ostriches now appear healthy, are not raised for food and are instead used for scientific studies of their robust immune systems. Universal Ostrich Farms is fighting back against the CFIA, but as you can imagine it is not easy. More information here and here. CFIA statement here.

One of the themes of the evening was just how difficult it is to avoid vaccination throughout childhood. It starts with having to always keep an eye on a newborn in hospital to ensure the hospital doesn’t vaccinate out of sight. It may be advisable to keep quiet about the vaccination status of the child lest relatives that believe in vaccines and might have temporary custody of your child and need to take them to a doctor and allow the doctor to vaccinate them. There is a need to explain the reasons for avoiding vaccination to your child as they get older lest they want to get vaccinated to fit in with their peers.
