Bill C-2 Strong Borders; Ongoing Ostriches
Our very own Scarborough Guildwood Rouge Park MP, Gary Anandasangaree is the Minister of Public Safety. Anandasangaree has introduced the huge 16 part bill C-2. Initial areas of concern include:
Part 4 allows officials to open letters - presumably to combat drug shipments but apparently without any privacy protections for actual letters
Part 11 makes cash transactions over $10000 at a time illegal except with banks and financial institutions
Part 12 relaxes rules for government and financial institutions to share your information supposedly only in the case of terrorism and money laundering which has uncomfortable echos of the Emergencies Act freezing the truckers bank accounts
Parts 14/15 allow government employees to get subscriber information from communications providers in some cases without a warrant if they suspect an offense has been or will be committed
This is a complex bill and I don’t even fully understand the summary. Clarifications and further issues are likely to emerge.
As best I can tell the ostriches at Universal Ostrich in BC are still alive. This is a federal issue. You can write to our local MP gary.anand@parl.gc.ca and or the federal Minister of Health marjorie.michel@parl.gc.ca
